Tampa

By Alissa Nutting
New York : Ecco Press, 2013.

This highly disturbing and ethically challenging novel is about an eight grade teacher, who also happens to be a lovely young menacing sociopath and pedophile, that seduces and manipulates her 14-year-old male students.

"In slaking her sexual thirst, Celeste Price is remorseless and deviously free of hesitation, a monstress of pure motivation. She deceives everyone, is close to no one, and cares little for anything but her pleasure." (publishers note)

What makes this so unsettling is that the author created a character so perfectly that is completely without morality, plotting and planning her to take advantage of young victims and will manipulate and hurt anyone to get what she wants which is her sexual gratification. To add to the disturbing nature of this work, it is even based on a true case in America where a teacher seduced her young students. While this story may make you squirm in your chair as you read of the cold-blooded mechanical thinking of a sociopath pedophile, it is a page turner and full of humor, yet very disturbing.
